Here is a few things I've learned so far, as well as some local resources.
1) Identifying birds
* Consider the size and shape
* Consider the overall color pattern
* Habitat - where is it? Ground? Low perch? High perch? Water?
* Field Marks - specific attributes and patterns
* Songs & Calls
2) Get a good pair of binoculars - 7x36 or 8x42
3) Get a good field guide - Peterson or Sibley
4) Pick up some bird audio CD's - Stokes
